Data Migration: How Your Spreadsheet Data Moves Into Your New App

A plain-English explanation of how data is migrated from spreadsheets into a custom web application.

One of the first questions clients ask: “What happens to all the data in my existing spreadsheets?” Good news — it comes with you.

How Data Migration Works

  1. Map the data: I review your spreadsheets and identify what data moves into which part of the new system.
  2. Clean the data: Spreadsheets accumulate inconsistencies. Data is cleaned and standardised before import.
  3. Import and verify: Data is imported into the new system. We verify record counts and spot-check entries.
  4. Parallel running: For a period, you run both systems. Once you’re confident, the spreadsheet is retired.

You don’t start from scratch. Years of data don’t disappear. The new system picks up where the spreadsheet left off, but with proper structure, validation, and multi-user access.
